ᐅ Is a ceiling-mounted extractor fan sufficient? Are affordable units reliable?

Hello everyone,
After the insolvency of our general contractor and extensive defect rectification, we are slowly starting to plan again in all directions (the shell construction has already begun). Unfortunately, the budget has become tight, and we need to see if we can maintain our plans. One of many (costly) considerations is:
Can we manage with a ceiling-mounted cooker hood? (Recirculation or vented option is still open)
- The kitchen is separated from the living/dining area by a 1.76m (5 ft 9 in) double sliding door
- Ceiling height is 2.51m (8 ft 3 in)
- The kitchen countertop will be around 90cm (35 inches) high
- A soffit of about 30cm (12 inches) height is planned below the ceiling
- The cooking station is (more or less) in the middle of the room
The cooker hood would therefore need to cover about 1.30m (4 ft 3 in).
Could you give me advice on whether this reliably works at all and, if possible, if there are any "affordable" devices suitable for this? (We probably won't be able to see the kitchen designer for a few more weeks)

After that, we spent several hours in two different kitchen showrooms looking at kitchens like this to see if something like that could work, and by now we can (very) well imagine it. So what you are criticizing here as still needing improvement, you actually assembled and "tested" in exhibitions?

So, what you are pointing out here as something still to optimize, did you actually "test" it in exhibitions? Exactly. The idea didn’t come from us in the first place, and at the beginning, we couldn’t really imagine it working. However, we have now grown quite comfortable with it, and the walls are already built according to plan.
But after losing a huge amount of money, ventilation systems costing 2000€ or more are out of the question. Since my better half doesn’t want a range hood "hanging in the middle of the room," we are looking for alternatives that can work as ceiling panels and don’t cost as much as a used compact car...
I can only recommend not to save money on this. Quiet and efficient... it’s better to prepare everything and install the range hood after one or two years, and until then just clean a bit more.
Considering how I cook, I would lose patience after the second time. I like to quickly turn from the prep area to the cooktop (two-line kitchen with about 93cm (37 inches) aisle width), stir something, and then go back to the prep area.
I don’t know how you arranged and used this T layout. But I can only imagine it being tolerable if one person does all the prep work, constantly moves things over, and a second person is responsible for the cooktop.

Deliverer17 Apr 2018 12:44Apparently, the layout was not really "tested" after all. Otherwise, the issue with the ventilation would have been noticed. Island setups are really only suitable for display kitchens (oh dear, here we go again! ;-), simply because extracting air effectively is very complicated.
So, the layout is not just impractical for cooking – if proper ventilation is required, it also demands a significant financial investment. €2000 is not enough. Even for wall-mounted range hoods, €2000 does not represent top quality. But starting at around €1000 can be satisfactory (for ducted ventilation).
So. Either:
1: Cook very little, then the ceiling-mounted panel works.
2: Invest a lot of money, so the unit lowers before cooking and raises again afterwards.
3: Redesign the layout.
Looking at what collects in the grease tray of my hood after a decent Bolognese sauce, I’m very glad I didn’t go for an island or downdraft ventilation. Otherwise, I would find all that grease on the fridge, cabinets, and windowsills.
