Hello everyone,
My home builder informed me that there is a new standard requiring surge protection for buildings planned from October 1, 2016 onwards. Since our planning was completed before this date, we are not required to install it. So, it is optional for us. The cost is 810€ including VAT.
Since it’s not mandatory for us, I wanted to ask what you think about it. The primary purpose of surge protection is to prevent electrical devices from being damaged by power surges. See also the information sheet attached.
I guess it’s one of those cases where you pay for some safety and maybe sleep better during a thunderstorm. Many people never have a lightning strike causing damage, but there are certainly some who do experience damage.
Personally, I am leaning towards not having it installed.
What do you think?
Regards,

ChrisDotze7 Nov 2018 21:51After today's consultation with the electrical installation company, everything will be purchased as planned.
I can only add one thing: new construction, shell stage, in a rural area. No electricity, cables freshly installed, screed freshly laid. Thunderstorm in June. Damage: over 8,000 euros.
Trades involved, especially the electrician (60 years of experience): lightning strike during shell construction – something we have NEVER experienced before...
The issue continues to have aftereffects to this day.
I am open to anything that might even remotely help… you learn from damage…

Where lightning strikes on individual occasions is unpredictable, and assuming that shell constructions are not affected from a lightning protection perspective is highly naive.

I support anything that might even remotely help... you learn from damage... The surge protection soon to be mandatory according to DIN VDE 0100-443 and DIN VDE 0100-534 works against overvoltages from the low-voltage network and can only have an indirect positive effect on direct strikes by reducing the amount of current fed back into the utility’s distribution network to neighboring properties.
Also, surge protective devices (SPDs) for power and telecommunications lines cannot replace a lightning protection system nor compensate for defects in grounding systems or antenna grounding.
Since the topic of direct strikes is off-topic here but of interest to me, I kindly ask for damage details via private message.
We have surge protection installed in the distribution board... but which type, I have no idea.
Please specify your interest. I cannot provide detailed information beyond damages and costs, but I am happy to help where I can...
