Hello everyone,
my name is Marc, I’m from the beautiful NRW region and I have a hobby: cars.
To accommodate all of them, I have garages here and there, mostly in existing properties, homeowners’ associations...
Recently, I bought another garage built in 1970, renovated it inside and out, and reroofed it.
So far, this garage is unfortunately not insured, at least not for the building itself.
My contents insurance would probably cover basic belongings, but it only contains my car.
Of course, I have private liability insurance, as well as landlord insurance.
Now I’d like to add this garage to the building insurance policy of my house, which is about 400m (440 yards) away as the crow flies.
However, according to the insurance agent, this isn’t possible. They offered me a new building insurance policy covering my garage for €120 per year.
I actually find that quite steep, since not much could really happen. But they told me there is apparently a minimum premium.
So I have the following question, which I never asked myself with any of my other properties: do I actually need building insurance for this garage?
Or is my insurance just being “complicated”?
I’m a bit stuck here. It’s not that I couldn’t afford the €120 per year, but is it really worth it?
Maybe you have some advice for me?
Best regards and thanks,
Marc

Do I even need building insurance for this?
You’re not telling us the most important details: what kind of garage is it? Location, detached? Size, etc…

Who says that?

What do you want to insure the garage against? Building insurance typically covers fire, storm, water damage from plumbing, hail, and possibly natural hazards.

What type of garage is it?

What is this really about? Are you focused on the building itself, or the vehicle inside it? These can be two very different things...

Hello everyone,

First and foremost, it is important to me that any damages caused by my garage are covered. The garage in question is a precast concrete garage, which is one of eight lined up in a row. Most of my cars have comprehensive insurance, and I basically don’t have any tools stored there.

Therefore, I consider risks like storm or hail damage, or other external factors that might cause harm. Water or electrical issues don’t seem to be a threat. Since the garage contains little that could be damaged, I’m now wondering what kind of coverage actually makes sense.

Best regards,
marc

Prefabricated concrete garage and roof newly covered. I just don’t get it.
