Hello everyone, I have an issue with my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit – the outer layers of the panels are peeling off in several places. These are the thin decorative veneers, which seem to be warping and starting to lift. I suspect this is due to moisture or simply natural wear and tear, but it is already happening after a relatively short period of use. My question to the community: Is there a way to repair or reattach these layers (meaning the veneer or decorative surface) myself without having to disassemble the entire shelving unit? What materials or adhesives are suitable for this, and how could one proceed effectively to maintain a neat appearance? I would really appreciate any tips or experiences!

Alternatively, a small paintbrush with superglue can be used if the area is not extensively detached. Superglue runs well under the film and cures quickly.

Great thread! I had exactly the same problem with my KALLAX and was able to save the shelf thanks to the tips here! Using photovoltaic adhesive and a lot of pressure worked really well for me 🙂 You just need a bit of patience – it’s definitely worth it!

Thank you for the feedback so far; the advice has been very helpful. One more question: Are ordinary household items sufficient for applying pressure (e.g., bottles or books), or do you really need special clamps? And if the delaminated areas are relatively large, is it better to replace the entire panel, or can you still glue it? The stability seems somewhat limited to me.

For small to medium areas, heavy books, bottles, or similarly weighted objects are absolutely sufficient. It is important to distribute the pressure as evenly as possible. For very large or thicker sections, using clamps can be beneficial to ensure better and more consistent pressure.

That depends on the condition of the panel: If the MDF or particleboard underneath is severely swollen or damaged, gluing won’t be very effective. If the panel is intact, repair is possible, but the effort increases with the size of the area. If a replacement panel is available, swapping it out can be quicker and look better.
