Hello,
We are planning to install a cassette awning on our terrace. We live in an area where it can occasionally get quite windy. According to major manufacturers, most awnings are designed for wind speeds up to force 5 on the Beaufort scale.
Is there anyone here who has installed an awning in a windy area and can share what these products can really withstand? We are concerned about light wind. In strong wind, we would not use the awning anyway.
Thank you very much!

That’s 5 bft. That shouldn’t be too low. At 3 bft, gusts reach 5 bft, and that’s enough for any sensor to retract the awning when the bushes start to move.
How wide and how far should the awning extend?
Solid construction or timber frame,
with external thermal insulation?

Especially because of its size, the awning was very vulnerable to wind; as soon as the wind picked up, we had to retract it immediately, at least partially.

We had the same idea of “no posts at all,” but at the same time it’s very windy where we live. We chose a 6x4m (20x13 feet) retractable arm awning, and it was an absolute mistake!
When it’s hot and windy at the same time, we often have to retract the awning partially or entirely, and then we’re left with no shade at all.
For the new house, there will be no awning anymore, but a slatted roof instead.

Solid construction or timber frame,
with exterior insulation? Width either 4 x 4 m (13 x 13 ft) or 6 x 3.5 m (20 x 11.5 ft). We are still flexible on that. Solid construction, 20 cm (8 inches) sand-lime brick and 16 cm (6 inches) exterior thermal insulation composite system (ETICS). Installation would be in the intermediate ceiling.
