LorenniHello everyone,
I recently bought a KALLAX shelf unit from IKEA and unfortunately noticed that some of the shelves still have stubborn label residue that can't be removed by simply peeling it off. The adhesive residue is quite tough, and since the shelf is made of the typical coated wood fiberboard, it’s sensitive to harsh or overly aggressive cleaning agents.
My question to you:
What is the best and gentlest way to remove stubborn label residue from the KALLAX without damaging the surface? Does anyone know of effective home remedies or specific products recommended for this? I want to avoid any damage or dulling of the surface after removing the residue.
Thanks in advance for your tips!

Soak with vegetable oil or cooking oil, let it sit briefly, then gently wipe off. That’s brilliant! 🙂 I did the same, and even the toughest adhesive residues came off really well. It’s best to wipe again afterwards with some dish soap and warm water to remove the oil. Good luck with the cleaning, it will definitely work! :-)
Hello Lorenni,
to gently remove stubborn label residues from the KALLAX, I recommend the following method:
1. First, wipe the surface with warm water and dish soap. This often helps prepare the surface.
2. If residue remains, take a lint-free cloth and soak it with some cooking oil (e.g., rapeseed oil or olive oil). Gently rub the adhesive with it and let the oil sit for a few minutes.
3. Then, use a soft cloth and circular motions to remove the adhesive residue. Repeat if necessary.
4. Finally, wipe the surface with a mild cleaner or dish soap to remove any oil residue.
It is important to avoid aggressive solvents (e.g., nail polish remover or turpentine) as they can damage the plastic coating of the KALLAX.
If you have larger pieces of the label, you can carefully lift them off first using a plastic spatula or an old credit card without scratching the surface.
Summary:
- Warm soapy water for basic cleaning
- Cooking oil to dissolve adhesive residues
- Soft cloth, no sharp edges
- No acetone or aggressive solvents
This should work without damaging the surface.
