Hello everyone,
I am planning to install Ikea Metod wall cabinets in my apartment on a wooden paneling. Unfortunately, the walls behind the wooden cladding are not visible and are likely not strong enough to attach the cabinets directly. Therefore, I am wondering how to securely and reliably mount the Metod wall cabinets to the wooden paneling itself.
Does anyone know the best methods to solve this issue? Specifically, I am looking for advice on the following:
- Which fasteners are most suitable for wooden paneling?
- Do I need additional reinforcements behind the paneling?
- Are there any special precautions when mounting Ikea Metod wall cabinets on this type of surface?
- How can I distribute the load of the cabinets evenly to avoid damaging the wooden paneling?
I look forward to any specific tips or experiences that can help me overcome this challenge.

Then I screwed a thicker layer of OSB board behind the wood paneling, which was attached directly to the wall. That way, I could fix the cabinets to it without any concern about the wall being too weak. Thanks for the tip! That’s exactly what I was worried about—that some reinforcement would be necessary. I hadn’t even considered using OSB boards.
I’m just wondering how to do this best with the existing wood paneling without visibly damaging it. Do you think it’s possible to place a thin backing layer (for example, 12 mm (1/2 inch) OSB) behind the paneling and then mount the cabinets to that, without harming or loosening the paneling?
Or would I need to remove the paneling entirely and then reattach it?
I want to avoid spoiling the appearance as much as possible since the wood paneling is still in good condition.
