ᐅ How can I set up Wi-Fi and telephone services, as well as technical installations, in the basement?

Hello everyone,

Since I am a complete beginner in the IT field, I’m asking for your help.

We are currently building a semi-detached house. Because of the underfloor heating, I have planned a CAT7 connection on every floor.

Now I’m wondering how I can later provide Wi-Fi and telephony throughout the house.

The incoming service line is located in the basement.

How can I distribute the telephony and Wi-Fi in the house using a FritzBox? I was thinking of installing an access point at the CAT7 outlets on every floor where needed. But how do I get the LAN connection there? Is it enough to connect the FritzBox in the basement to the network ports that end at the CAT7 outlets and then set up access points?

Also, I need to know how to connect a telephone (which will be located on the ground floor) to the FritzBox that is in the basement. Maybe Wi-Fi telephony?

Sorry for my awkwardness and many thanks for your help!

I can't say anything about Mikrotik, but the Unifi controller works perfectly with the Edge for me. Safari also works very well.

You don’t need to buy a controller. You can install the software on a PC and configure the settings there. These settings are then applied to all devices. This is the advantage: you make one configuration and transfer it to all devices at the same time. The controller also doesn’t need to be running continuously.

Yes, this definitely should be emphasized. There is absolutely no need to buy the controller. Just install it once on the computer, set up the access points, and you’re done.

Yes, if it turns out to be these APs after all, I will proceed accordingly.
At first glance, I liked the Mikronik devices. However, the access points seem to have some issues and do not appear to be actively developed further. Very unfortunate. I will continue searching calmly... fortunately, there is no rush at all with this topic.

The prejudice against Mikrotik access points being "weak" is something you often hear. In my opinion, the hardware is excellent, and the software is outstanding, but because of the wide range of configuration options, there is also a lot of room for error.

By the way, although with Ubiquiti you can start the controller only when needed, this does not cover all use cases. I find Mikrotik's CAPsMAN concept to be much more professional in that regard. As I said, this comes at the cost of a steeper learning curve. Otherwise, I hardly know any company whose products are so continuously and actively developed as Mikrotik’s, and where all customers benefit from these improvements free of charge and indefinitely. It is true that new products (with new technologies like 802.11ax) sometimes take a bit longer to appear than those from the larger players, but I don’t see this as a big issue, since these technologies first need to gain acceptance in the market to become truly usable.

This works if there is a controller managing the roaming. From my experience, a Fritzbox does not handle this very well.
With the Unifi APs (greetings to @K1300S) it works perfectly instead.

Thank you very much. I just took a look at the Unifi APs. The ceiling-mounted option is actually pretty cool.
