I am currently working on improving the Malm dresser drawers from IKEA, as I feel there is room for improvement, especially regarding the durability and smooth operation of the drawers. My specific question to the community is: What basic measures and solutions do you know to generally enhance the functionality, longevity, and user-friendliness of the Malm drawers without requiring major modifications? I am interested in practical adjustments to the mechanics as well as tips on material care or better interior organization. What experiences have you had in this area?

Hey, great topic! 😄 The Malm drawers are actually quite practical, but you quickly notice that they don’t last forever – especially since they often become a bit stiff to operate. Recently, I replaced the rollers with higher-quality nylon wheels, which really improved the smoothness! You can also easily lubricate the drawer slides with something like silicone spray – that helps prevent squeaking or sticking. Just be careful not to use too much, as it can attract dust. Inside, I use flexible storage boxes that fill the drawer nicely, so nothing slides around. Sounds simple, but it adds a lot of convenience. My advice: “Less is more,” the basics often make all the difference. 🙂

Clean and lubricate the guide rails.
The same space does not need to be fully utilized; it is better to organize it with inserts.
Regularly check wooden components and screws and retighten them.

For a general improvement of Malm drawers, I recommend the following points:

1. Replace the original rollers with more durable nylon or ball-bearing rollers with a load capacity of at least 45 kg (99 lbs) to enhance smoothness and durability.
2. Regularly clean the guide rails with a microfiber cloth to remove dust and dirt, reducing friction.
3. Use a dry lubricant (e.g., dry PTFE sprays) instead of oil to avoid attracting dust.
4. Tighten wooden dowels and screw connections to prevent looseness and noise.
5. Optionally install damping buffers or compatible soft-close mechanisms for smoother closing.
6. Optimize the interior organization using flexible boxes to better distribute weight and protect the drawer from warping.

These measures fundamentally improve functionality without requiring major modifications to the furniture.

This is amazing, how much you’ve already gathered here! 😄 From my experience: just completely empty the drawers and take apart the sliding components for cleaning – after that, everything runs much more smoothly!

I can fully confirm that! And if you use soft storage boxes with light padding, you’ll immediately notice how stable everything stays. Oh, and stick small rubber feet inside the drawer to prevent the bottom panel from warping.

Give it a try, it’s worth it! 🙂

I would like to focus on the functional aspect: to fundamentally improve Malm drawers, it is especially advisable to upgrade the mechanical components. The original rollers are often made of low-quality plastic, which results in rapid wear and stiff operation.

Installing high-quality nylon or ball-bearing rollers with high load capacity significantly increases stability and durability. It is also important to use only dry lubricants, as liquid greases tend to attract dirt over time and can cause jamming.

Furthermore, I recommend ensuring an even weight distribution within the drawer's internal organization during use. Avoid overloading individual drawers to prevent warping or damage to the wooden base.

Finally, a rational internal subdivision with high-quality boxes can improve accessibility while also stabilizing the drawer structure.
