Hello everyone,

I’m looking for ways to perfectly fit IKEA Billy bookcases into base cabinet niches or other unusual niche dimensions. The challenge is that these niches often don’t match the standard width or height of the bookcases, and I want to achieve a precise fit with minimal carpentry work or expensive custom solutions. What components, additional products, or methods have you tried to install Billy bookcases securely in niches without them wobbling or looking out of place? Are there any tips for adjusting the back panels, sides, or shelves? I look forward to hearing your experiences and recommendations, including materials or tools you would use.

Hello everyone 🙂 I find it almost a bit exciting how a simple Billy shelf can turn into a little puzzle.

I still see the back panel and shelves as a challenge...

A little tip from me: You can easily adjust the back panel using a utility knife and a cutting mat. The material is usually hardboard, which cuts nicely—no saw needed.

As for the shelves: they can be modified without much effort using a fine-toothed saw or a jigsaw. If you don’t have those, a handsaw works too, it just takes a bit longer. A bit of sandpaper on the cut edge afterward—and you’re done! If small chips are visible, paint or a white touch-up marker from the hardware store will fix that, making it look like new again.

This way your shelf stays neat and fits perfectly. And don’t worry, everyone has doubted themselves at some point when it comes to these kinds of adjustments 😉 Good luck!

I can easily understand that the idea of modifying a finished system can cause some uncertainty. Especially with a popular piece of furniture like Billy, you don’t want to unintentionally compromise its stability.

One approach that helped me is using metal corner braces in addition to the battens to provide extra stability when the modification changes the original construction. This way, you can prevent the shelf from wobbling or warping under load.

With simple tools (hammer, small hand saw, screwdriver), you can achieve a lot. If the shelves need to be shortened, be sure to measure the drill holes precisely beforehand so the pins will still fit.

You’re on the right track, and it’s completely reasonable to plan carefully and start small. Good luck!

An important tip for stability: check the connection to the wall. Usually, screwing or clamping the shelf to the back wall can significantly help prevent wobbling, even if the niche doesn’t fit perfectly.

Additionally, filling strips made of foam rubber or felt can be used to compensate for small gaps without affecting the appearance or damaging the shelf.

Keep an eye on the weight: do not overload the shelf if the adjustment slightly weakens its original stability.
