Hello everyone, I am currently planning a kitchen project using IKEA METOD and am facing the challenge of cutting the countertops myself, as the standard sizes do not fit my measurements. My specific question is: What tools and techniques are best suited for cutting METOD countertops accurately and cleanly, without damaging the surface or edges? I am also interested in any special preparation steps I should consider, such as marking, using guide rails, or protective measures. Although I have basic experience with woodworking, I want to ensure the best possible outcome, especially when working with METOD panels. Thank you very much for your tips and recommendations!
I had the same problem. I cut along the line step by step using a jigsaw and painter’s tape, then smoothed the edges with fine sandpaper. It was a bit tedious, but the result didn’t disappoint me. That’s why, personally, I wouldn’t necessarily buy a plunge circular saw for one-time use.
I can fully understand how uncertain you can feel about making such an important cut. It’s really reassuring to know you’ll achieve a clean result. Maybe try it first on a scrap piece before cutting the entire countertop. That way, you can get a feel for how well your jigsaw works when cutting with painter’s tape and build confidence from there.
Last night, I used a leftover piece and taped the cutting line with painter’s tape. Then I slowly cut along the line with a jigsaw, which worked surprisingly well. However, the cut edges are a bit rough, even after careful sanding. Do you have any tips on how to make the edges smoother and more durable, or is this simply an unavoidable drawback when cutting with a jigsaw?
That already sounds very good for a jigsaw. For even smoother edges, I recommend: - Using edge banding that matches the panel, which can be ironed onto the cut edge. This makes the edge visually more appealing and protects it from moisture. - Alternatively, fine edge profiles that can be glued on are suitable. - After sanding, you can also seal the edge with clear varnish. It is important to sand with 240-grit or finer sandpaper in the direction of the grain to achieve the smoothest possible surface.
The time spent on sanding is especially worthwhile for visible edges.
