Hello everyone, I am currently planning a kitchen project using IKEA METOD and am facing the challenge of cutting the countertops myself, as the standard sizes do not fit my measurements. My specific question is: What tools and techniques are best suited for cutting METOD countertops accurately and cleanly, without damaging the surface or edges? I am also interested in any special preparation steps I should consider, such as marking, using guide rails, or protective measures. Although I have basic experience with woodworking, I want to ensure the best possible outcome, especially when working with METOD panels. Thank you very much for your tips and recommendations!

I was also afraid of cutting back then, but with patience and edge banding, it turned out really well. The preparation with painter’s tape really helped protect my surfaces. Wishing you continued success!

The most important thing, in my opinion, is to be patient and to carefully protect the edges so you don’t end up with any unsightly marks afterwards.

Thank you, I truly feel that careful and patient work is essential. That’s encouraging, even though it can be time-consuming. I will now start applying the edge tapes and will report back on the quality of the result.

In summary: - A plunge saw with a guide rail is ideal for precise, clean cuts - A jigsaw can work if handled very carefully, especially when using painter’s tape as protection - Edges must be thoroughly sanded smooth and sealed with edge banding - Preparing by marking and testing on scrap pieces is very helpful This way, you avoid common issues such as splintering, uneven edges, and moisture damage. Good luck with your project.

If you need to make cutouts later on, for example for a sink or stove, I recommend using a panel cutter or a router with the appropriate bit. This saves on rework and allows for cleaner edges than using a jigsaw alone.

Thanks to everyone for the extensive and helpful tips! I have now ordered the edge banding and will report back once everything is finished. The discussion here really gave me a lot of confidence, even though I don’t have professional equipment. The advice to work slowly with the jigsaw and to use painter’s tape was especially invaluable.
