Hello everyone,

We are planning to purchase the Aeroblock WAB 11 heat pump from Weishaupt, which runs on propane. We were told that other refrigerants will be banned starting in 2025 and that propane is very efficient. Does anyone have experience with this?

What exactly is your question? R290 = propane is a commonly used refrigerant today, so everything is fine in that regard.

Apart from that, the claim that other refrigerants will be banned starting in 2025 is currently incorrect. You can look up PFAS bans and the revision of the F-Gas Regulation.
You will see that harmful gases/refrigerants are intended to be banned – but this only applies to new installations. The planned regulations do not include replacing existing systems. There is also the possibility of special quotas.

With propane, no matter how the discussion develops, you will definitely be on the safe side. In particular, synthetic refrigerants are expected to be banned. Propane or ammonia are of course natural substances.

By the way, propane is a hazardous gas—highly flammable and combustible. The seller probably did not mention this drawback ;-)
==> But don’t worry. The quantities used in a heat pump are really manageable. Nevertheless, there may be restrictions if the system is installed indoors.

I would personally have no problems buying a unit with R32 today (which is currently used in most heat pumps). You can even recharge it in case of a leak until at least 2030.
