Hello dear homebuilding community,

We are currently considering building a house.
The construction company offers, at no additional cost, either a gas condensing boiler or an air source heat pump (Rotex hpsu compact 304 with 4 kW).

The house would have 130 sqm (1400 sq ft) of living space over 1.5 floors, with underfloor heating on both levels, for a household of two adults and one child who only lives in the house occasionally.

Do you have any advice for us?

Thank you very much in advance!

Isn't this just a small plastic "exhaust pipe"?

Yes, it should be like that. The exhaust temperature is so low that only a small plastic pipe is needed, which can easily be concealed within a 24cm (9.5 inches) or even a 17.5cm (7 inches) interior wall.

As a rough estimate, the air source heat pump would have cost me 2 to 3 times more than a gas condensing boiler.
I personally decided against the air source heat pump because it becomes inefficient at low temperatures below -12°C (10°F), which basically means heating with electricity.
It is also commonly claimed online that air source heat pumps are not as easy to repair when they break down, and heating engineers often prefer to replace the entire unit. However, I cannot confirm how accurate this is in practice.
