Good evening,
we are currently planning our house and want to install a chimney for a wood-burning stove. Now we are wondering whether it should be inside or outside? There is space available for both options. Can someone tell me the advantages and disadvantages? Which is cheaper, considering that we could install the external chimney ourselves?

The one for the boys’ two wood stoves is made of stainless steel, located inside, and lined internally, while the one for our masonry heater is stainless steel on the outside. Fresh air intake from outside can also be done with stainless steel; it doesn’t have to be built with masonry.
In the end, it’s a matter of style.
The external one is on the covered terrace (top photo) and runs through the flat roof of the middle section of the building, then through the roof overhang. From a distance, it doesn’t even look like an external chimney (older photo with scaffolding – the one on the left is external).

Ours cost 4000 inside (Euros). You can't just use any standard hardware store stove anymore. With controlled residential ventilation, you have to consider that a pressure monitor is needed. That's not cheap either. 4000€ for everything? Fireplace, stove,...

2 for the stove
1 for installation
2.5 for the pressure monitor
The additional cost for our general contractor was 4500 euros. The pressure switch is extra. Our neighbor had one installed for 800 euros. I will probably do it that way if I ever need it.
A kit costs around 600–1200 euros on eBay. I don’t think they look bad at all. Having it installed by a company likely costs about 2000 euros, so you save quite a bit of money.
