Hello
Here is the "problem":
- Old farmhouse with tiled stoves and an old chimney flue (there is a second one that is fine, but it only has a small stove connected and the pipe still runs above the hallway :-/, we still need to clarify if that is still possible...)
- The chimney flue is degraded from the base up and the crown is brittle
- We want to reconnect two tiled stoves and a large "new" kitchen stove (Glutos, stored wrapped in plastic for 20 years!) and put them into operation (house renovation planned for residential use)
- So far, we have received three opinions :-/
a) Repair from the base up and repair the lower part with concrete (this option was around 5,000€)
b) Completely new chimney (however, we would like to avoid demolition inside the living areas) estimated at 2,000€
c) Insert a stainless steel pipe into the old chimney flue and connect the stoves to it (this is our preferred option!)
Only, who would approve this? The chimney sweep was quite unfriendly on the phone and tried to discourage us from doing this :-(
Now we are confused because all three options involve very different costs.....
What would you recommend? Does anyone have experience with this?
The house dates back to 1875! The grandparents moved out around 1980, I believe...! Since then, it has been empty, though it is used for storage and as a chicken coop and for saddles, etc., but otherwise unused. In winter, we heat the old kitchen stove (small Glutos) just to prevent soaked feed from freezing and to keep the water pipes from freezing — there is no smoke inside the rooms, the smoke exits normally through the chimney!
We would like to start soon...
- Straighten the chimney, then build a second inner wall on the weather side for insulation (we are not allowed to insulate on the outside!), then install new windows, and convert the old smoke chamber in the former bedroom into a bathroom (connect and lay pipes, etc.)
We are from Saxony (Colditz), maybe someone knows someone who can help us!?
Thank you
