ᐅ Facade insulation with mineral foam boards?

Hello everyone,
We have just become the new owners of a single-family house built in 1954 with zero insulation.
After discussing with an energy consultant, we were advised to install external wall insulation using 16cm (6 inches) mineral foam boards.

Does anyone have experience with this type of insulation? Costs? Necessity?
Or, more generally, does anyone have long-term experience insulating an older building made of 30cm (12 inches) lightweight expanded clay aggregate blocks? Or would it be better to avoid external wall insulation altogether?

Thanks in advance
Best regards, Manuel

It may be expanded clay from 1954, but is that certain or just a guess?
Lightweight aggregate is not only found in the Middle Rhine region (and is sometimes confused with it).

Volcanic pumice isn’t only found in the Middle Rhine region (and is sometimes confused with it).

Sorry, you’re right, it is pumice.

I would check with the manufacturer to see what they include in their current products (there are some pumice stone products that integrate an insulation layer as a wall shell, similar to a layered snack cake). It should be compatible with the building material of your house and could be a product that is also available separately.

With the proposed insulation, you probably won’t even meet the energy saving regulations (standard approach: porous concrete masonry from the 1950s with a U-value of 0.9). Using the mineral foam board, you end up with a wall U-value of about 0.30. The required value is 0.24.

Definitely consult with an energy advisor. In my opinion, you should use at least 0.32 EPS graphite boards.

ETICS (External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems) are also available in "eco-friendly" alternatives. Wood fiber insulation boards combined with a ventilated façade are just one of many examples. A professional should provide advice on this (who?). The energy consultant will then calculate whether it meets the requirements (with the target specification).
