ᐅ Exhaust hood in a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery: What are your experiences?

Hello everyone,

Does anyone here use an exhaust hood despite having a controlled mechanical ventilation system? Generally, recirculation is recommended with controlled mechanical ventilation, but it seems possible to use an exhaust system as well, which appeals to me (odors and dirt stay outside).

What are your experiences?

Thank you in advance!

We also spent a long time considering recirculating versus exhaust air systems. Our kitchen installer, whom we trust (reportedly one of the top 100 in Germany), clearly recommended an exhaust system. Of course, there are different solutions that can all work well and need to be adapted to the specific house, especially since having a fireplace makes things even more complex, as mentioned.

It’s also quite subjective whether someone notices odors or not. For example, smokers seem to be much less sensitive to smells. A colleague of mine (a non-smoker) says he doesn’t notice any odors after a three-hour cooking marathon, without any controlled ventilation system and no hood, just by briefly airing out the room afterward.

Well, I’m a bit skeptical about that, but anyway.

As I said, if anyone thinks they can calculate the heat losses or the increased heating demand, I’d be interested to see that myself.

I have never smelled a recirculating hood that actually works well – but plenty of exhaust hoods, even inexpensive ones, work effectively.

There may be recirculation solutions available, but they usually come at a higher cost. I’m too thrifty for that, so we’re installing an exhaust hood – the window contact is already discreetly integrated into the frame.

You don’t need to switch it on for every meal – sometimes the mechanical ventilation system in the kitchen is sufficient.

Regarding energy consumption, I wouldn’t worry about it at all...

I have yet to encounter a recirculating range hood that really works well – but plenty of exhaust hoods that work fine even in budget models.

Then take a look at how well a Berbel recirculating range hood performs.

Compared to the Siemens exhaust hood installed in our "old" apartment, this recirculating hood is not only easier to operate but also noticeably quieter, more effective, and even features a maintenance-free, self-cleaning activated charcoal filter.

Why?

My post was just meant as a tip on which recirculation hood definitely works well.

Nothing more, nothing less – I already noticed that you mentioned well-functioning recirculation hoods are not necessarily inexpensive.

Best regards,

Well, you said I should check out Berbel – I know them, and I find them absolutely overpriced. But definitely stylish – it’s just that the cost isn’t convincing enough for me to invest a lot of money in them.
