Good morning,

We are planning to have a fence installed around our property soon (Brandenburg). On the internet, we found various websites with very different prices and materials. Since we are complete beginners when it comes to building, I would like to take this opportunity to ask for your tips and recommendations.

1. Our goal is to order a durable, low-maintenance fence for the front of our property (facing the street, 20.10m (66 feet) long). Based on initial research, a metal fence, especially a galvanized steel fence, seems suitable. Aluminum fences were often mentioned as well. Do you see any advantages or disadvantages to aluminum fences?

2. Do you have any advice on how to buy good fences at a reasonable price? Ideally, the delivery should arrive by May 2021. I ask because I’ve occasionally heard in conversations that there are good fence suppliers in Poland, and that it might be worthwhile, especially since we live in eastern Germany. Perhaps some of you have experience with this?

I would appreciate any tips.

There is probably no material with a good reputation that hasn’t been poorly installed by some amateur at some point :-(

It was installed by a botched job crew two weeks ago, then some wind came:

Park with grass, two metal benches, slanted dark wall panels, trees in the background.

I find the stick fences really ugly… well, let’s say not attractive.
At first, we requested a quote for them due to budget reasons. Since we found them so awful, we then asked for alternative offers, including WPC (wood-plastic composite) and Siberian larch. WPC was really expensive and somehow felt artificial. The larch was actually about the same price as the stick fence including the mesh panel. So, we went with the larch. Indestructible, very nice, and natural.
Well, you have to like the patina that develops over time.

Well, there is nothing wrong with larch wood, but is it really more attractive?
Do you mean a traditional slatted fence or a 'solid' board wall? I find the latter quite unpleasant in appearance, even when using the nicest wood.
The anthracite wire mesh panels are hardly noticeable, similar to dark insect screens.
The plastic strips woven into them are definitely an eyesore and harmful to the environment.

Are you thinking of a traditional slatted fence or a solid board fence? I find the latter to feel quite heavy, even with the nicest wood.

No idea. It always comes down to “what do I like.” We wanted privacy screening.
This is what it looks like. We think it’s really beautiful.
(Please overlook the plants and the bare areas, as the garden is still completely “unfinished.”)

Garden at night: lawn, wooden fence, potted plants, and a Buddha statue at the edge.
