ᐅ Direction of parquet installation: parallel or perpendicular to the incoming light in the living room

Hi,

How would you lay the parquet flooring in this apartment layout? Uniformly across the light direction in the living room, or uniformly along it? The parquet will be installed uniformly, meaning there are no plans to change the orientation in different rooms. It is also decided that the hallway and kitchen areas will have parquet, just to clarify that in advance.

Best regards,
Maria

In a conversation with a carpenter friend, he recommended "30°". After implementing it once for a customer on request, he would never do it any other way.

But ideally only in a random pattern; otherwise, it’s a tedious job to create an appealing joint layout and also leads to a lot of waste.

I want to emphasize a hallway about 10 m (33 feet) long and about 1.50 m (5 feet) wide – along its length?

I don’t think this can be answered clearly at all...
When I was a student, I lived in a room that had two differently sized doors. I highlighted this difference even more by using colors. Since then, I have understood that especially emphasizing the existing features of a room can be appealing.
I would decide this based on whether I am the type of person who prefers inspiration or someone who prioritizes calmness.

But you really have to want that.

Personally, I always find diagonally laid flooring to be intentionally "trying too hard" and consider it unnecessary and silly, but of course, taste is subjective 🙂

I can still accept a "normal" diagonal layout (even though it’s not my first choice), but two-thirds diagonal? 😱

A good criterion, especially from a craftsman’s perspective, is: What is easier to manufacture? Parallel (perpendicular) cuts are simpler than cutting each part diagonally...
