Hello. Our general contractor told us that it would be better for him to take care of the gravel bed around the house as well. According to the contractor, this should be done before applying the exterior plaster to ensure a neat finish afterward. Until now, I always thought that the gravel bed could be installed sometime after the house was completed. The contractor said that the gravel bed is excavated with an excavator and that if the exterior plaster had already been applied beforehand, it would be damaged and compressed. What are your thoughts on this?

We don’t have a gravel bed around the house, nor is the house plastered; it’s brick cladding. Still, I imagine that when plastering, some material will definitely fall down. What will the gravel strip look like then?

Excavating the strip now would be fine with me, but I wouldn’t fill it with gravel yet. Depending on how the plasterers work, it might also be necessary to clean the strip afterwards.

We are currently working on the gravel bed in the external insulation (after the exterior plaster).

Excavating with an excavator would be completely unnecessary since it doesn’t need to be dug deep and it’s not very wide either (30cm (12 inches) in our case).

We will need to repaint the base again because it has gotten some dirt and splashes here and there. But that will be done around the whole house within about two hours.

I also find it a bit odd to install the gravel bed before the plastering. Plastering creates a lot of mess, so the bed would definitely have to be covered at least.

The downspouts come after the plastering... they then need to be connected to the wastewater system... this may require quite a bit of excavation... [emoji848]

I don’t think he means fine-tuning with stones using gravel, but rather the gravel-sand that should be used around as a bedding layer... however, isn’t that usually done together with the foundation slab? [emoji848][emoji848]

I suspect that the general contractor just wants to secure another project. If anyone else has an opinion on this, we would be very grateful. General contractors can be quite unsettling…
