Our temporary construction power is scheduled to be connected tomorrow. We were informed about this rather last minute, just before the weekend, and at this point, it’s basically impossible for us to be there at the scheduled time. Is it unusual or is it normal for a homeowner not to be present?

You don’t need to be there for that....
When you get your house electricity, it’s better to take your time then...

Oh, unfortunately it probably would have been better for us to be there... such a mess... the road around our plot forms a U shape, and we have one of the inner corner lots. Supposedly, there is no distribution box we can connect to for temporary construction power because they are all located outside and it is not supposed to be routed across the street... I wonder where all our inner neighbors got their temporary construction power from... we are now supposed to arrange with one of them to share their power (of course with a separate meter)... I always thought that was prohibited. Or is it only forbidden if done without coordination with the utility company?

Do I understand correctly that your temporary power box will be placed on the property? If so, you could set it up next to the distribution box and run the power onto the site using a cable reel. It probably won’t be more than 100–150 meters (330–490 feet). To cross the road, you can make a drive-over cable protector out of wood to safeguard the cables. Any company will have cable reels, and the setup should take about 3 minutes.

To cross the street, you can make a wooden cable duct that vehicles can drive over to protect the cables. Every company has cable reels, and setting this up usually takes about 3 minutes.

I have no idea what exactly the problem is... from how you describe it, I would have also assumed that this could be done (around here, near our rental apartment, they’re currently doing it the same way), but apparently the responsible people didn’t want to allow it... at least my husband (who was involved in the back-and-forth phone calls) never mentioned it or was not offered this as an option.

Hello Yosan

Ask your neighbors if you can connect to their power supply. Be generous when settling the bill. It will still be significantly cheaper than a temporary construction power connection.

Buy a used meter on eBay, ask your neighbor what they pay per kWh, and round the price per kWh up. Then you won’t have any problems and will also save money.
