Hello,

we have a 30 sqm (320 sq ft) terrace paved with polygonal concrete pavers with 12 mm (0.5 inch) joints (actual joint depth 8 cm (3 inches), plus approximate 3 cm (1 inch) shallow false joints), and we filled the joints with basalt jointing grit 1–3 mm (0.04–0.12 inch). So far, so good. However, the fairly fine/light grit has the disadvantage that during heavy rain the grit particles are washed out of the joints, and afterward the terrace surface feels like a foot scrub (we like to walk barefoot on it; personally I don’t mind, but the ladies find it annoying).

A solid joint made with polymeric joint mortar was suggested as an alternative, but with the joint depth and especially the joint width, this becomes quite expensive. It would also be a huge effort to keep the joints only partially filled to maintain the required minimum joint depth of 30 mm (1.2 inches) (even with a new installation).

Has anyone had experience with applying polymeric (slurry) joint mortar into the existing grit joints so that all voids are filled with mortar, creating a solid joint together with the grit?

In the upper area, the grit could be removed relatively easily using a vacuum cleaner (works great).
