Hello,

I have been reading this forum for some time now. Thanks to the various topics, I have been able to understand many issues. We are currently at the stage of finalizing the construction contract.

I would like to take this opportunity to present my concern.

We like colored windows. The offer includes colored windows from Gealan, KBE door and sliding systems, or glw. After consulting with the builder, these are not the acrylic version from Gealan, but only windows covered with film. I am now worried that this film covering might fade over time.

I am wondering if this kind of film-coated window is actually any good, and if the color will remain stable for many years. Alternatively, we could have frames in the desired color for 900€ less.

I would like to ask the forum about experiences with film-coated windows or if it would be better to choose the colored frames instead.

Best regards
Raik

Hello!
In our current house, we have plastic windows covered with a film (gray film on white plastic). The house is now 7 years old, and so far there have been no problems, meaning no peeling, cracks, or similar issues, and the color has not changed.

During construction, one window frame got a few scratches because the workers apparently walked in and out of the house multiple times through this window from the outside scaffolding or transported materials this way. The film was damaged in these spots, and the exposed white plastic was, of course, very noticeable. The repair consisted of cleaning and then repainting with the correct RAL color. Surprisingly, this has held up well to this day and is practically invisible from the outside since it is a window on the upper floor – you would only notice it when cleaning the window.

From my personal experience, there is therefore no major drawback to film-covered windows, except possibly their greater sensitivity or the more complex repair process in case of damage (which should normally not be an issue in everyday use).
