We have a KfW-55 end-terrace house with insulation, triple glazing, and a ventilation system. Now we want to install a cat flap in a glass panel next to the patio door. Has anyone done this before?

- How does this affect the performance of the ventilation system? It won’t be completely airtight anymore.
- How much heat loss can we expect – it’s just a simple plastic flap, after all.
- Is installation even possible with triple glazing that also has RC2 security features?

We would have a professional company do the installation, but we’re not sure if it’s all feasible. I would appreciate hearing about others’ experiences.

The airtightness test for a KfW 55 house without ventilation is basically a joke! The limit value is 3 air changes of the volume per hour.

We had the flap installed later.

In my case, that would leave a hole in the glass, which is not an option for us 😉

We have a standard flap built into the door to the utility room. I don’t notice any drafts around the flap, and even when the window in that room is open—because of the smelly toilet—very little cold air gets through. So, it’s well sealed.

Our girls are let out by us. After finding a dried-up mouse in my closet, I’m a bit sensitive about letting them roam freely.

In the past, they used to come inside by stepping on a bell mat, which is something they learn very quickly. Nowadays, they have a scratching barrel outside where they can cozy up if we don’t respond right away.

When we go on vacation, the two stay outside. They have fur and their shelter for that.
