We have a KfW-55 end-terrace house with insulation, triple glazing, and a ventilation system. Now we want to install a cat flap in a glass panel next to the patio door. Has anyone done this before?

- How does this affect the performance of the ventilation system? It won’t be completely airtight anymore.
- How much heat loss can we expect – it’s just a simple plastic flap, after all.
- Is installation even possible with triple glazing that also has RC2 security features?

We would have a professional company do the installation, but we’re not sure if it’s all feasible. I would appreciate hearing about others’ experiences.

Yes, our cat is especially good at waking me up when she wants to go outside.
She usually leaves her prey near the door so that the dog can eat it afterward. 😉

It's simple. A moist nose in the ear and a heart-melting meow.

We had the Sureflap retrofitted into a floor-to-ceiling window. The glazier replaced the entire glass panel for this.

It also works with a chip, so it only lets our cat through. I’m not sure if it always works smoothly in practice — so far, she hasn’t used it but had her human open the patio door instead.

I can’t say whether it has a negative effect on our ventilation system or our extractor hood. I haven’t noticed any issues. And honestly, I don’t care if the poor seal of this tiny flap causes an extra 5 EUR in heating costs per year. It hasn’t felt noticeably cold near the flap even this winter.

Yes, we also thought about a Sureflap. We already have one on the garden shed that he uses. And our tomcat has never brought a mouse or anything like that into the shed through that flap. We want to give him the option to come into the house to his sleeping place when we’re not home. Otherwise, he stays outside all the time. He doesn’t like that, and we don’t get a moment of peace even if the neighbors watch out for him and check on him.

How much did replacing the glass panel cost? We’ve received a quote of 1,600 EUR including installation of the flap 😱

So far, we open the door for our tomcat whenever he wants to go out or come in. Here’s a tip that many might not know: for coming inside, we use a cat bell with a motion sensor. When our cat is at the door, the device inside rings or lights up. It’s no bigger than a computer mouse and can be placed anywhere. The range reaches up to the third floor.

We have a simple cat flap installed in the basement door. Since our tomcat is very territorial and we also have a dog, no stray cats or other animals have ever entered. However, it’s not very well sealed. Our cats are already old, and there won’t be any new ones, so this was the easiest solution. The basement door is also old and will be replaced after the cats pass away.

The option with inserts in the window is certainly elegant, but for me, it would be too expensive, not sufficiently airtight in a new build, and often not secure against break-ins. There are often issues with insurance in case of a break-in. The safest and most sustainable solution remains manual opening...

For us, it was 600 EUR including installation for a triple-glazed pane measuring 1x2m (3.3x6.6 ft). They also installed the flap. Still expensive if it’s not going to be used… 🙄
