Hello everyone,

My husband and I have been looking for a suitable building plot for some time now. We recently came across a plot that is almost perfect: great location, price and size fit our plans.

Unfortunately, there is a high-voltage power line about 100m (330 feet) away from the plot.

Should we be concerned about this? Do such power lines produce noise when they carry a strong current? So far, we haven't noticed anything, but we’re not sure if we were just near it at the wrong times. What about the term "electrosmog"? Could a high-voltage power line be harmful to health or cause disturbances in any way?

I would appreciate any experiences and tips you might share.

Best regards,
Nixa

High-voltage power lines generate magnetic fields that can be harmful to health the closer you live to them. The same applies to mobile phone antennas and similar sources.

Hello Nixaja,

I think Baufinanzierung is not entirely wrong there. Electromagnetic pollution can certainly lead to health issues over time, so I would be cautious.
High-voltage power lines emit a certain humming noise in damp weather (drizzle or fog), which personally wouldn’t bother me that much.
I could imagine that television reception might be affected if the power line is positioned unfavorably in relation to the satellite antenna.

I wouldn’t buy a plot of land if a high-voltage power line runs so close by, and the reason the plot is still available despite a good price and location is precisely because it’s difficult to sell due to the power line.

We also have a plot of land near a high-voltage power line. When it rains, you can hear a faint crackling sound coming from it. I'm not sure if we would have bought it otherwise, but it was simply already there.

High-voltage power lines generate a magnetic field, which can cause varying levels of exposure.

With antenna masts, the situation is often different. A spot 500 meters (550 yards) away can sometimes have a stronger exposure than directly beneath the antenna.

There are also ways to shield yourself from these effects, such as using conductive plaster or shielding fabrics.

Determining whether such exposure is harmful to health is difficult, as too many factors are often overlooked. Sometimes the most idyllic locations can be the most affected— for example, due to natural uranium deposits or similar issues.

I would say this is a personal decision that you need to make for yourselves.

What reassures me is that one of the horses grazing right next to the mast is already 32 years old. So it can’t be absolutely deadly.

Hello...

Many thanks for the replies.

We have thought it over again and will probably keep looking...

That would have been too good to be true.

Thanks again and best regards
