My partner and I plan to renovate—or rather demolish and rebuild—our old barn starting in spring 2011.
We do have a friendly architect on board, but his approach is always: tear everything down and start fresh.
Specifically, we have two questions we hope to get answered here.
1. What about the old wooden beams? Are they reusable, and if so, who should inspect or calculate their structural integrity? We would like to keep the old beams because they create a very different atmosphere compared to boring new ones!
2. Is it possible to build a thin wall in front of the existing masonry and fill the resulting cavity with loose insulation material? Again, our architect’s general answer was: demolish and rebuild!
Thank you in advance for the hopefully many answers and ideas!
