I am looking for a durable sealant for the surface of my Kallax shelving unit from IKEA. I understand that the standard surface is coated with melamine, but heavily used areas quickly show signs of wear and scratches.

Therefore, I would like to know if there is a sealant or varnish that provides long-lasting protection without affecting the appearance of the unit or making it look unattractive. It is also important to me that the sealant does not peel off or yellow after a short time and that it is relatively easy to apply.

Has anyone had experience with durable sealants for furniture with melamine surfaces, especially for Kallax? If so, which products have proven to be reliable?

Matte polyurethane-based varnish is suitable. Durability for items like shelves usually lasts several years when applied carefully.

Preparation is crucial: sanding, dust removal, and possibly using a primer. Then apply several thin coats of varnish.

I think it’s a shame when furniture like the Kallax is treated in a way that ruins its great appearance. This happened to me as well, and I wasn’t happy with the result.

Maybe it helps to protect the shelves with felt pads or to use plastic covers for heavier use. That way, the original surface stays intact.

Still, I wish you the best of luck finding a suitable sealant that offers lasting protection while preserving the look.

Are these paints available in a matte finish? I’d like to keep the matte look of the melamine surface.

Of course, matte paint is available. However, keep in mind that every coating changes the appearance of the surface. So, if you really want the original look, any sealant is a compromise.

Exactly, sometimes prevention is better than repair. It’s better to be careful daily than to rely on a supposed permanent solution that might bother you in the end.
