Hello everyone,
I have a somewhat specific question and am hoping to benefit from your experience and expertise:
Is it suitable to use the IKEA BILLY bookcase permanently in a basement room?
I understand that basements are often more humid and can be prone to mold or moisture exposure, which might affect wooden products like the BILLY. My basement is not an unheated, open space, but ventilation is limited and the temperature fluctuates, especially in winter.
Has anyone had experience with the BILLY in these conditions regarding its long-term stability and usability? Are there any preventive measures I could take to stop the bookcase from swelling, molding, or warping?
I look forward to your opinions and tips, especially from those who have actually used the bookcase in a basement for an extended period! Thanks in advance.

Is it possible to use the BILLY shelf from IKEA permanently in a basement room?BILLY is not designed for damp environments. If your basement is humid, you will likely encounter swelling and mold issues.
Tip: Either ensure very good ventilation or, preferably, choose a shelf made of metal or specially treated moisture-resistant wood.

BILLY is not designed for damp environments. That is correct. BILLY is made of particleboard with a melamine coating, which is not waterproof. Constant exposure to moisture causes the boards to swell and can lead to delamination over time.
If the basement is not completely dry, it is advisable to either monitor the humidity levels or use shelving units made of specially treated plastic or metal.
Additionally, I recommend using a dehumidifier, especially in unheated basement areas. This can help extend the lifespan of the furniture.

Particleboard with melamine coating that is not waterproof. That sums it up well. I have used the BILLY shelving unit myself in a basement room for storage purposes, but only because the basement is dry and heated.
For unheated or more humid basements, I generally do not recommend BILLY, as damage is almost inevitable.
A practical solution might be to treat the shelf with water-repellent foil or special coatings, but this does not guarantee full protection and is more of a temporary fix than a long-term recommendation.
