ᐅ How to properly align the BILLY shelving unit: How can I do it on my own?

PLOFA45Hello everyone, I recently bought a BILLY shelf from IKEA and now I’m facing the problem of setting it up correctly without it wobbling or leaning. Since I want to do this on my own, I’m interested in the best way to align and secure the individual shelf parts to ensure long-term stability. Are there any specific tools or aids that are essential to use? And how do you proceed when the floor is not completely level? I’m grateful for any tips!
Hello PLOFA45 🙂 I can totally understand wanting to level the BILLY shelf by yourself – it definitely works, you just need a bit of patience. A small spirit level is really important to make sure it doesn’t look crooked later on. If the floor isn’t perfectly even, small felt pads or wedges under the back of the shelf can help compensate for any unevenness. Also, make sure to properly insert the shelf supports so everything is secure.
So: use a spirit level, place small supports underneath, and ideally assemble the shelf step by step, leveling as you go. With these tips, mine has stood stable for years and looks great 🙂 Good luck!

Hello PLOFA45, your concern is completely understandable, and there are good, practical solutions for it. Basically, you will need:
1. A spirit level (preferably a small hand-held level that you can place on any shelf surface).
2. Possibly small felt or rubber pads if the floor is not perfectly even.
3. A screwdriver or cordless drill, depending on how the shelf needs to be fastened.
First, assemble the shelf completely before checking the alignment. It is important that the back panel is fixed to the wall – this provides the necessary stability to the structure and prevents rocking or wobbling. If you have an uneven floor, you can use felt gliders under the shelf surface or adjustable furniture feet.
I fully agree with this. One more small tip: Allow yourself enough time, as leveling can sometimes be a bit fiddly, but with patience it works well 🙂 Good luck!

I have a slightly more nuanced view. Of course, a spirit level is essential for proper alignment, but it is often not enough on its own. You should also consider the load-bearing capacity and material deformation, especially when the shelf is fully loaded.
This can lead to problems over time if those supports are not stable enough or if they slip. Although it is generally advised against, in some cases it might be worth checking whether the floor needs some improvement, for example by leveling out small uneven spots with filler.
Furthermore: anyone trying to align the shelf alone should definitely not forget the wall mounting. This is not only a safety measure but also essential for preventing long-term wobbling.
Question for you, PLOFA45: What type of flooring do you have? Hardwood, tiles, or carpet? This could make a significant difference here.

Thanks first of all for your answers!
@difepeo: My floors are laminate, unfortunately not completely level, as our house is quite old. I have already thought about placing small shims underneath, but I’m concerned they might eventually slip.
I have also been thinking about the easiest way to precisely align each shelf board – is there a trick to install them one after another so they all sit evenly and don’t end up crooked later?
I would appreciate it if someone has a proven method for installing the boards optimally when working alone. Thanks!
