Hello

In the future, I want to build a smart home based on Home Assistant. Since Matter hasn’t really taken off yet, I’m relying on Home Assistant.

Which voice assistant would you recommend for controlling a smart home through Home Assistant? Google or Alexa?

Siri is not an option because we don’t have an iPhone.

We use a Google Pixel 8 Pro phone and a Pixel Watch 2.

I now need to buy a TV box for our TV.

I want to buy the TV box that fits best with the voice assistant.

Alexa – Fire TV Cube 3

Google Assistant – Google TV streaming device

I’m looking for a voice assistant that is easy to use and understands many commands well.

I want to use the voice assistant to control the smart home, for example:
… Drive the blinds
… Activate TV mode
… Activate scene XY

I haven’t used any voice assistant yet because I don’t have a smart home setup so far.

Which one would you recommend?

Should I go with Google since I have a Pixel phone, or do you think Alexa is better?

The speech recognition is better with Google, while the skills and device support (in terms of availability) are better with Amazon.
Unfortunately, I don’t know which is the better choice regarding Home Assistant.

Then Google is probably better for me, right?

I don’t need Alexa Skills since Alexa only needs to be compatible with Home Assistant, and Home Assistant integrates various systems. Alexa or Google just need to understand rules and scenes and trigger them in Home Assistant.

Another advantage for Google is probably that I always have the assistant with me on my wrist or in my pocket (Pixel phone and watch).

Amazon offers a better selection of devices like Fire TV Cube, Echo Show, Echo Dot, and so on.

But Google has a better operating system—Android makes it easier to run Kodi.

Which voice assistant do you think has more advantages for me?

If Matter finally takes off, everything will be compatible with everything anyway.

I run everything at home through Alexa. I can’t see any reason to switch to Google.

Why did you choose Alexa? What does Alexa do better than Google?

I don’t have anything at the moment, so I’m completely free in my decision and can later build everything around the right voice assistant.

Right now, I only have a phone and smart watch from Google.

Because Amazon makes better speakers. Almost everything you can buy is compatible with Alexa. The voice control doesn’t run through the phone (I have Apple).
