Hello everyone,

Since my lawn has become very uneven and the area near the forest at the back is quite muddy, I want to topdress the lawn with sand and level it.

My plan is to spread about 10 liters of sand per square meter, smooth it with a lawn rake, overseed, roll it, cover with topsoil, rake again, and finish.

My building materials supplier offers the following types of sand (I don’t want to buy lawn sand from the hardware store because of the price and the fact that I will need about 3 tons due to the area):

- Washed silver sand (play sand)
- Rhine sand 0/2
- Concrete sand 0/2

Which one is most suitable?

Normal sand, grain size 3 - 4mm (0.12 - 0.16 inches)
Sorry, but I don’t know of any sand with a grain size of 4mm (0.16 inches); that is more like fine gravel.

I did this project 2 years ago. I mixed 70% sand from the building yard, which cost 24 per ton gross, with 30% soil.

Before applying, I mowed the lawn as short as possible.

I spread the mixture using a homemade lawn rake. It works great.

Only in spots that were deeper did the grass not manage to grow, so I had to reseed those areas.

Now, after 2 years, it would be necessary to repeat the process because holes have formed again. But I’m not motivated to do it right now.

Thanks also for the tip about the drainage. We actually installed drainage pipes because the ground is extremely clayey and rocky. Naturally, they shouldn’t get clogged.

I wasn’t referring to the drainage pipes. Sand simply has a water-draining effect (called drainage). This improves the more it avoids clumping and the more space there is between the grains.

My local gravel plant still classifies that as sand.

Ideally, washed quartz sand with a grain size of 0-2mm (0-0.08 inches)
