ᐅ Which software is recommended for floor plan design and modeling?

Hi,

my wife and I are just starting our project to build our own detached single-family house. The plot of land is already secured, and now we are working on the floor plan design.

I would like to model our ideas in a floor planning software in 3D, as this helps to better visualize things and get a clearer impression compared to sketches on paper.

However, this is not about creating a final model like an architect would do. Therefore, I am not looking for a professional high-end tool, but rather something that allows simple rough modeling to brainstorm ideas.

Which software would you recommend for this? Thanks for your suggestions!

What use is a self-developed floor plan if it might not be buildable or financially feasible?

Well, most people here tend to build according to the architect’s or an existing plan.

Whether using catalog or custom floor plans: financing cannot be resolved through (virtual) model building. However, it can at least help to evaluate, visually or even tactilely, in one’s own imagination whether the house concept “works.” Only a few homeowners can directly translate drawings into “3D” in their mind. The financing aspect would require a software feature where “every excavation bucket costs.” In that sense, @hampshire Junior’s suggestion of “Minecraft,” where you have to craft and cheat your materials first, is quite good—although, as a house planner, I mainly see it as a lighthearted proposal.

In short: a waste of time for everyone involved!?!

At least when it comes to Lego, no. You can involve the whole family, whereas based on my forum experience, planning software is usually only used by “him” OR “her,” while the other partner stays passive, not to mention the children.

Many believe they have to build with a general contractor (GC) just to avoid hiring an architect.

No, the vast majority expect relief from coordination duties by hiring a GC, anticipate a surcharge compared to individual contract prices, and assume that this can only be balanced out with the “included cellar slave” (site worker).

Everyone probably has to gain the experience for themselves. Personally, I found it much more convenient not to spend late nights working with SH3D, trying to recreate some floor plan from the internet, only to realize it doesn’t really work... In that case, spending a few thousand euros on an architect was worth its weight in gold.

In my view, this is an essential learning phase—being able to read floor plans and visualize where tight spots or missing rooms are, identifying walk-through rooms, hallways larger than living rooms, and so on.
If the architect delivers the perfect floor plan but the client can’t understand it, it doesn’t help.
That’s why any engagement with floor plans trains future homeowners.

Attention, kids! The internet does not check floor plans for functionality before uploading! 🙂
What was the specific issue in your case: Did you use unmeasured floor plans without determining the dimensions, or did you modify the floor plans? Or does the “doesn’t work” relate to your point about financing, meaning you recreated plans that were too large?

everything you described.

I can recommend Cadvilla. I traced the floor plans from the offers as well as the property layout. Over time (almost three years now), I have continued to use the drawings. I also marked every power outlet and created 2D derivations.

My requirement was:
The software should not only provide a rough overview but also allow the creation of detailed drawings later on, as well as the ability to create or use custom 3D objects.

I have invested several hundred hours into it. Currently, I am planning the outdoor area. The options are both a blessing and a curse. It is easy to get lost in details when you want to plan access paths, curbs, front gardens, drainage, etc. with centimeter precision.

Here is an example of how the program helped me and allowed me to explain certain "issues" to my wife. In this case, it was about the tile height in the guest bathroom and whether to tile the windowsill or not.
PS: In the end, except for the top of the windowsill, everything was tiled.
