ᐅ Home Construction – A Never-Ending Project?

How did you feel just before moving into your new home? We are about to move in (early September), and of course, the excitement is really high, but every time I notice a new “to-do,” like a lit house number, a mailbox, or some outdoor lights. I feel like this will go on forever, and that feeling is really wearing me down. The feeling of never being finished. I know you can’t have everything done at once; many things will be added over time. Right now, I just can’t focus or come up with ideas for the utility room. Most of the furniture has been ordered, but many small things are still missing, like a desk, lamps, or dressers. Some things need fixing, and at the moment, painting is in progress. I’m still ignoring the outdoor area for now, but I think that will change quickly once we’re living in the house and I see the construction site outside every time I look out.

How long did it take for you to really feel at home? When did you feel completely “done”? Or does a house always remain a work in progress, with something to do all the time? Looking forward to your answers :-)

Same here. I guess I should rename myself to Hangman II 🙂;)

My condolences. Do you also often find yourself wondering afterward, "What was I thinking this time?" I probably annoyed our home builder a lot with my bluntly fitting and flush block frame doors. They do look nice, but I probably wouldn’t have been any happier with standard doors either. At least it was a good acid test for the endurance of the poor home builder 😀

Thank you all for your replies 🙂 I think I recognized myself in some of the comments. Unfortunately, I also have the image of the perfect house in my head and often get lost in details—I spent hours searching for wall lights and a gallery light… The bathroom base cabinets were really difficult—in the end, the carpenter is making them now. We still don’t have the interior doors either; they’re expected in two weeks. I’ll have to lower my expectations and be patient, otherwise my husband might end up having a breakdown because of me.

So here’s a friendly piece of advice: relax, enjoy a good red wine, and be happy

After the most intense phase was over, I took a break from forums and social media! All the “what could have been done better” discussions were not good for me. I spent about 80% of my free time on house building topics for nearly two years. Planning, preparing for tasks (painting, wallpapering, etc.). I did a lot myself, sometimes driving myself crazy.

Since last week, I have set up the last room—our office—so that it is at least partially usable. Without a basement, one room always had to serve as storage. The garage is still unfinished, so it’s basically still a shell. That means you need a spot for all the tools somewhere. They are now divided between the utility room and the walk-in closet—one on the ground floor and one upstairs. Sometimes I have to look for where I put something (saw, drill, screwdriver, etc.).

I am currently planning the outdoor area. But I have only been able to get properly motivated again recently since the workspace in the office is finally set up! From there, the rest will be planned along with the many small and large ongoing projects.

Nowadays, you really have the “pain of choice.” I also believe that this is why it takes longer than if, simply put, you only had to choose between two options.

:edit
In addition, you hardly get any feedback on inquiries these days. Since May, I haven’t received any offers for garage doors... nothing. Currently, three inquiries are in progress, and I have followed up several times, but all I get is that there is “a lot of work right now.” I heard from an acquaintance that manufacturers themselves are experiencing supply difficulties and cannot supply all dealers (see another thread here).
Oh, and on top of that, money just sits in the bank, and you keep paying penalty interest...
