ᐅ Illuminating a Single-Family Home from Below / How to Implement?

Hello everyone,

We are currently building our single-family home and have deliberately decided not to install recessed lights in the roof overhang. Instead, we want to illuminate the building from below.

However, we are quite uncertain about the following points:

- Number of lights
- Placement of the lights
- Beam angle
- Which types of lights are recommended? The garage door should also be illuminated, so the lights would need to be trafficable, etc.

In short, this is all new territory for us, and I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions you might have.

You can find an exterior view of our single-family home attached.

Thank you very much 🙂

Good luck

There are numerous suppliers available, such as We-Ef, for example. Additionally, various attachment lenses are offered for different light dispersion effects. However, as mentioned, ground spikes are not permanently stable, so the floodlights tend to wobble, and recessed housings often fog up from the inside. For low-level ground lights, insects like ants frequently nest inside. All ground-mounted lights cause issues of some kind.

If you’re willing to invest more, these problems don’t occur!
(Many plazas and buildings are illuminated like this…)
But with fixtures costing $19.90, it usually won’t work out.
(And no, we don’t have anything like that.)

Unfortunately, price is not the main factor here. Professionally, we have tested and installed almost every type of recessed ground spotlight. After just a few months, they all experience issues with condensation. None of them are 100% watertight.

Can you recommend any other suppliers besides We-Ef?
Are We-Ef products only available through authorized dealers?

We have also tried a lot from iGuzzini; I personally installed one model at home. It was a wall-mounted light fixture, model "Walky," round shape. But everything went through our electrician.

As long as you don’t direct the light straight into the sky but only cause some diffused light, this is acceptable in terms of light pollution. The roof overhang acts as a good light barrier.

Regarding lighting, we have had great experiences with stage lighting equipment. At the music school, some of these surprisingly affordable lights are used and they do not cause any moisture problems. They were purchased from one of the largest music stores in Europe located in Cologne.
