Hello everyone,

I have some minor renovations coming up in my apartment, and while cleaning the rooms, I noticed a kind of "coating" under my window sills. One is gray, while another window sill has a lighter, almost white coating. At first, I thought it might be paint residues, but the lighter coating has a strange ribbed texture. When I touch the underside with my fingers, some of the coating rubs off. It looks like dried paint, at least that’s my initial guess. However, I’m not an expert in construction or renovation, so I hope you’ll forgive my question.

For additional information: I know my apartment was renovated about seven years ago, but I have no information about whether the window sills were replaced or treated. The building itself was constructed at the earliest in the 1970s.

Does anyone have any insight? I’d rather not clean under the window sills if it could be an asbestos-containing covering.

Attached are pictures related to the issue. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Best regards,
Jochen80

There isn’t much to see. But with almost absolute certainty, this is not asbestos. It is simply a poorly finished and unpolished cut surface, and at the bottom, the wallpaper is overlapped and painted over.

Hello,

first of all, thank you for your reply.
That reassures me for the time being. I have looked into it, and the material of the windowsill appears to be marble. At least on that point, I should be on the safe side.
However, I am puzzled by the light coating in the second picture. I have no idea what that could be.

Regards,
Jochen

Don’t get worked up about it. Depending on the construction year, asbestos was used in various applications. But definitely not in this case. Just don’t look underneath anymore 🙂
