Bought a house, estimated the renovation budget plus 10-15% for inevitable extras, and we set aside 5000 EUR for the kitchen!!!!
That’s how it started... at first, I was in a bit of shock, but we still had time. First step: remove all the walls for a new layout—I need space...
Let’s start with the (according to the agent) move-in ready property. The small kitchen, just under 8 square meters (about 86 square feet), had its 1970s pass-through removed. The wall including the kitchen door is gone! The wall next to the cellar stairs is gone too! Actually, the entire slanted wall, nearly 7 meters (23 feet) high, removed completely...
The window had to go as well since we needed a different working height than the standard 90 cm (35 inches). New screed installed, we switched to underfloor heating, all electrical wiring and water pipes are new.
After almost six months, the realization slowly sank in: the kitchen budget will not exceed 5000 EUR, so we had to look for a used kitchen... something special, but very cheap.
The search criteria: within a 100 km (62 miles) radius, up to 1000 EUR, because I still want new appliances.

A trip to Germany really needs to be planned sometime. To see all the houses discussed here beyond the usual standard in person. I never really liked the atrium bungalow, but what I’m seeing now surprisingly appeals to me. If you’re ever in the Wetterau region, feel free to drop by for an espresso. Even though I skillfully ignored most of the tips in the planning thread 😉 , it’s always nice to say thanks for the time invested over a coffee!

I just don’t get out much anymore, thanks to Corona.
Yes, you ignored almost everything, if I remember correctly. 😉
Whether that was a good choice, only you can decide. Visually, I like it better than I expected. I admit that too.

It might be due to the image quality, but in my opinion, it actually looks high quality. After a long consideration, we also decided to go with a piece of wood with a live edge.
The Maggi bottle in the back of the wall still needs one of those silver holders 😉
Unfortunately, the concrete ceiling isn’t completely level, and this also affects the walls because the plasterer didn’t do a very good job. Most of the issues on the defect list were related to the plasterer. We’ll seal the gaps with an acrylic joint. For now, I’m leaving everything open, hoping it might help with ventilation behind the cabinet. We’ll wait for about a year to get rid of the building moisture; the wardrobes and bed are currently all placed about 10cm (4 inches) away from the walls.
The hallway is a bit of a challenge for us, especially since our dog has been deaf for two years now and has taken to expressing himself with loud barking :/
And then the kitchen is barely visible because of all the pots and pans 😉
But we actually use it a lot; we both enjoy cooking and cook frequently. My wife always complains and says she needs to photograph it for Instagram, but at least it gives a nice overview of what we’ve been eating in recent days 😀

My wife always makes silly comments about my use of Maggi, but on my father’s side the family comes from Singen, so Maggi is just in the blood 😉
The best is always her horrified look when I eat dry gray bread with Maggi 😀
Do it for the gram! 😉
I wouldn’t say too small (65”), but definitely too high. I had planned power and network there, but I don’t need it because the TV is powered through the cable duct with one-wire. Just annoying that the outlets ended up exactly where the wall mount was supposed to be.

The TV also feels quite lost. Too small, too high.

knalltüte22 Mar 2021 12:46My dad is like that too. And at 83 years old, that probably won’t change anymore. A few years ago, a friend gave him a really large bottle (1 liter (34 fl oz)?) for his birthday. He uses Maggi on just about everything... Personally, I’ve stopped doing that. I can’t even eat half a bag of Oriental chips without getting cramps at night 😳
