Hello,

I am facing a big puzzle: my laundry chute inlet shaft is now finished with fixed plaster and embedded edges, with dimensions length = 31cm (12 inches) and height = 28cm (11 inches).
Now I’m looking for an access door or something similar that I can install here. Unfortunately, all sizes I find are only 20x20cm (8x8 inches) or 30x30cm (12x12 inches). I just can’t find anything. I don’t mind if it’s metal, wood, etc.
Does anyone have any ideas for me?
Attached is a photo...

Open wall opening with green cylindrical core and surrounding white spiral (construction site).

Inside, it would also need to be lined because there is a 300mm (12 inch) diameter pipe installed and cut open.
Thanks,
Y

Wow, which clever fool from Schildburg came up with this ingenious design and then didn’t think it through?

This happens when a homeowner comes up with an idea during the construction process with a general contractor (GC) that the GC doesn’t actually offer, and then the GC just heartlessly installs a pipe because the homeowner mentioned “just putting a pipe in there.”
Or is this even a DIY job? 😱

I would first focus on the gravel cladding, build some kind of funnel with any material, maybe wire and plaster, which can then be covered with leather, felt, or smooth plaster. Something like that. It definitely needs some more thought.
It shouldn’t be the hatch that’s the problem – as a homeowner, you can get really creative here: a small stable door, window shutters, a piece of large leather, or even a foldable IKEA mirror... Piano hinges can be attached to pictures, wall decorations, and wood pieces, also to wall shelves or anything else that can be repurposed as a hatch.

Maybe I should make this a new mantra: "no special features when building without detailed plans."

This topic is brought up here almost every day whenever someone working with a general contractor expects the flexibility of an architect-designed house.
