We are currently looking for a kitchen for our new build, which is scheduled to start in 2021. Nothing extravagant. Our first two visits to kitchen showrooms resulted in prices of at least 15,000 euros (around $16,000 USD), plus the side-by-side refrigerator that we plan to buy ourselves.

We are a bit surprised that for just a few pieces of furniture and three appliances (dishwasher, cooktop with fan, oven) we have to pay at least 15,000 euros. The consultants actually expected around 20,000 euros. The countertop is not even ceramic but rather granite.

Are there other options to purchase an affordable kitchen?

Please don’t get me wrong. We could afford such a kitchen. We just don’t see why we should spend 20,000 euros on a few furniture pieces and appliances.

Yes, 20k is nowadays the starting price for kitchens, but you do get some features included.

For our cost planning, my father-in-law (who works in real estate development) and the architect estimated around 20,000 € (about 21,500 US dollars). From the beginning, we had a gut feeling that this would not be enough. Our current custom-built kitchen already cost 20,000 € (about 21,500 US dollars) back in 2010, and it is about half the size and equipped with less advanced appliances compared to what we will have in the new house. This one is costing us 27,500 € (about 29,600 US dollars).

Impossible to judge without knowing what and how much has been planned. There are some cost drivers in kitchens or things that simply come with a price. If you present your kitchen in another forum, you will surely get help to make it more affordable.

But for example, a marble slab is simply not considered low budget.
