ᐅ Dining table 2m or 2.2m... we are unsure

Hello dear forum,

we can’t decide whether to choose the dining table measuring 2 m x 1 m (6.6 ft x 3.3 ft) or 2.20 m x 1 m (7.2 ft x 3.3 ft).

We would actually prefer if there were 3 chairs on each side and none at the head or foot of the table. However, the chairs can’t be pushed under the table because the table legs get in the way. That’s why we’re unsure if the table with the chairs will take up too much space. The chairs are 60 cm (24 inches) deep. The table is positioned so the chairs are on the west and east sides.

What do you think??

Thank you very much for all the responses. Things are quite hectic for us right now, so I barely have time to write. However, I am very glad that so many have replied.

We currently have a 2x1 m (6.5x3.3 ft) table. It comfortably seats 2 people on each side and 1 person at each end. So it is absolutely sufficient for 6 people. An extra 20 cm (8 inches) wouldn’t hurt, but it’s not really necessary.

What do you do when you have guests over or celebrate birthdays?
If a couple with two kids hosts another couple with two kids, you already need eight chairs.

I hope it’s okay that I don’t create a separate thread just for this.

I keep thinking about the best way to comfortably seat eight people at the table, as I feel we don’t have much space for a large table.
On a daily basis, six chairs at the table might be enough, but for guests, two additional chairs should be comfortably placed.
Can three people sit comfortably opposite each other at a 240cm (94 inches) table, or is that too tight? If so, I would only add two more chairs at the ends of the table when guests come.

Can you comfortably fit eight people at a 2m (79 inches) or 2.20m (87 inches) table as well?

2m (6 ft 7 in) is just about manageable. We currently have 2m (6 ft 7 in) and have already had eight people using the space. It’s not exactly comfortable. You inevitably start having to puzzle around with dishes, cutlery, glasses, food, and so on.

I think it also depends on how you eat. If it’s just about food on the plate (Russian style), then it’s easily manageable.
But if the dishes are also served in pots and pans on the table and everyone can help themselves, like it used to be, then space becomes tight. And if it’s Asian food (or raclette), it’s no longer workable.
However, I think for these rather special occasions, you can use side tables and serving carts.

I think it also depends on the chairs and the table legs – I may have mentioned that before. With wide chairs or obstructive table legs, it can sometimes be impossible to fit three people on one side. In our case, three people can just about fit along a table that is nearly 2 meters (6.5 feet) long. Of course, having more space is more comfortable, especially when there are salad bowls and other items on the table for everyone.
