Hello everyone,

I would like to know the following:
  • Which trades did you complete as DIY work?
  • Would you do these tasks yourself again or rather not, and why?
  • Did you specifically take time off during the construction phase, or did everything happen alongside your regular schedule in the evenings and on weekends?
Thank you

Painting work. Flooring, excluding tiles. With professional help—my brother is a master painter—it went well. Without him, it would have been a disaster. Applying filler to walls and ceilings is really only for experienced people. It’s also physically demanding. He finished an entire room; I couldn’t even complete one wall.

Garden landscaping, planting, and lawn seeding—with the help of a friend’s gardening equipment, including a motor tiller and roller—can be tiring if you approach it like farming, but it’s also enjoyable. I am very satisfied with the result; our lawn is the best in the neighborhood without buying ready-cut sod.

Attic insulation. No problem with a carpenter in the family. It’s hard work. You have to know how to do it—now I do.

Own labor for all trades except interior and exterior plastering, screeding, roofing work (for roof covering, we of course specified tiles), and floor coverings (glued tiles and vinyl).

Total vacation time over 2 years (because we built from mid-year to mid-next year).
Additionally, about 4 hours every evening and 10–12 hours every Saturday.

Another 600 hours contributed by volunteer construction helpers (excluding costs for construction accident insurance).

I would do it all the same way again at any time.
The worst job was filling and sanding, but the rest was actually enjoyable and—not counting proper instructions—not rocket science and doable by anyone.

Always planned and built all floors, ceilings, and walls (regardless of the material), plumbing installation, suspended ceilings, terraces and outdoor areas, stair coverings, some electrical work, garden shed, and heating (Geisha) myself.
Soon also underfloor heating, roof insulation, and external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS).
All in different projects, whenever there was/is time.
Oh, and a pool construction was also included.

All sheet metal work including connection to the sewer system, complete sanitary installations, complete water piping, insulation of the foundation slab/underfloor heating, installation of the underfloor heating, assembly and installation of the heat pump, assisting a friend’s tiler, flooring on the upper floor completely done, individual rooms self-spackled and sanded, assisting a friend’s painter with wallpapering, painting work in the bathrooms.

I took time off work for this and was on the construction site every day and every weekend; it was similar with my father.
