ᐅ Preparations for paving a two-lane side driveway?

Hello,

In the past few days, we received 220 square meters (2,370 square feet) of paving stones and want to install them before the end of this year if possible. Among other things, a new double-lane side driveway will be paved. For cost reasons, we will carry out the work ourselves with friends.

What is the best approach for double-lane driveways? Everything we found refers to large driveways but not specifically to two-lane ones. How should the base layer be prepared here? A large excavation, mineral sub-base and crushed stone, then paving the two lanes and filling the middle—essentially the same as for a large driveway—or are there different methods?

Best regards, Rhusmaf

And make sure to compact properly—compact and compact again. Laying the stones itself is just tiring; the real challenge is the preparation work.
Definitely get a pallet truck to move the pallets continuously.

@Joedreck He’s right. I have a 50cm (20 inches) base layer and compacted it thoroughly. Still, after 11 years, ruts have formed. The subgrade is extremely important. And ignoring Greta for a moment, with the knowledge I have now, I would install a lean concrete layer. That said, my area is not very large.

Hello, definitely not the worst advice.

Excavate generously. Then bring in recycled concrete (RC) material, water it with a garden hose, and compact it with a plate compactor (new from around 300€, buy, use, sell — cheaper than renting).

Next, set the edging stones in concrete. Your paving needs support on both sides. You can also set the outermost row of paving stones in concrete. Then add more RC material in the middle and compact again. After that, apply gravel, then screed it with water. Then lay the paving stones, compact again. Done.

If I were you, I would have asked this question BEFORE buying the stones and solved it with gravel grids and decorative gravel instead...

You will need:
Concrete in bags (screed cement), 25 and 40 kg (55 and 88 lbs), usually priced the same, but 25 kg (55 lbs) bags are easier to handle.
Concrete mixer
Concrete tub
Shovels + spade + trowel
Muscle power
Spirit level (2 m (6.5 ft) and a short one) and a water level
A thick rubber mallet or hammer with a rubber buffer
Wheelbarrow(s)
Many tons of RC — no idea, maybe 30?
Gravel
Concrete curbs
String line and steel rods
Marking spray
A heavy-duty angle grinder with a diamond blade (the segmented ones from Norma are excellent)

For two lanes, the amount of edging stones, curbs, and concrete needed doubles.

Your life will be much easier if you rent a mini excavator or micro digger for a day to excavate, plus a compact loader like an AVANT for spreading the gravel and removing the excavated sand. It can also lift a ton, so if the edging stones and concrete are on pallets, you can distribute the pallets practically, reducing manual carrying.

Anyone can operate a wheel loader — it’s fun.

Operating an excavator is more of a challenge with all the levers and spatial awareness needed.

If you’re working on the site anyway, do the infiltration system at the same time. Bury a nicely perforated drain pipe wrapped with fleece alongside the path.

Have fun. Make sure to chill enough alcohol-free beer.

What is the purpose of watering before compacting the RC crushed stone?

1. It becomes more compact
2. I don’t inhale the dust
3. The air filter of the plate compactor doesn’t get clogged

Wow, that sounds simple for a layperson! Please keep in mind that a standard trailer can only carry 13 bags of screed, so you’ll need to make many trips. The same applies to excavation material. If I fill 30 tons, I end up with 40 tons of excavation. That equals 80 car trailers. Or should I hire a professional company instead?
