Hello,

I was planning to buy a fireplace kit, install it myself, and then have it inspected and approved by my chimney sweep. That’s how some of my friends did it.
I have a controlled mechanical ventilation system and intended to connect a differential pressure switch and integrate it with the ventilation system. The total cost, including finishing the wall for an independent air supply fireplace, would be about 5,000€.

Now, my chimney sweep told me this is no longer allowed and that he wouldn’t approve the fireplace. He insists that it must be installed by a certified professional. Well... I’ve requested quotes, and they range from about 14,000 to 18,000€, which is definitely too expensive.

Are there really legal regulations that forbid self-installation? If so, why are such kits still widely sold online?

Can I ask another chimney sweep about this? The first one already performed the inspection during the shell construction phase.

Thanks in advance for your experiences and help!

Best regards,
Alex

Fortunately, our chimney sweep is flexible; his certification is sufficient since we only have a recirculation exhaust.
I also spoke with the chimney sweep before construction started.
Well, he said there are two options when operating a controlled ventilation system and a fireplace simultaneously:
1. DiBt-approved fireplace + controlled ventilation installed according to DIN 1946
2. DiBt-approved fireplace + differential pressure monitor

We have also spoken on the phone several times, but it was never mentioned that everything must be installed by a specialized company.

In the end, it’s about not dying. That’s why you’re allowed to install a faucet or a window yourself, but not an electrical outlet, a fireplace, or a gas stove.

You can think that’s unreasonable or reasonable, but since people regularly die because of these things or houses catch fire, it seems to be necessary.

I understand all that, and regulations are good, but they should apply equally everywhere—not yes here and no in the next town.

It’s like with building plans and building authorities; their strictness varies from place to place.
You can’t do everything on a low budget.

Have the chimney installed and wait until the chimney sweep changes. You can check every few months.

Do you have the chance to talk to other homeowners who have already worked with this district chimney sweep master? Maybe he just appears strict but isn’t actually that strict.

That was definitely the case for us. Beforehand, he complained that if we relocated the oil heating system as planned (DIY) and installed a stainless steel external chimney ourselves, the operating permit would be invalidated and the heater would not be allowed to be put back into service. In the end, everything was fine, there was no problem at all, and he approved the renovation.

We are just about to move in, and I have now installed vinyl flooring around the fireplace area. I also had the screed lowered slightly there to achieve the same height for the tiles and vinyl.

Do they have to rotate their districts every few years?
