Hello everyone,

we are planning to build a >townhouse with Team Massivhaus and would like to install many recessed ceiling lights on the ground floor. Our developer is charging 180 euros per light, which I find very expensive. Do you have any ideas on how to do this yourself or outsource it differently? Best regards and thanks in advance

Is the €180 for the drilling or box, spotlight, converter, and connection? Then the price seems almost reasonable to me.

The contributor provided the following information:
Recessed spotlight in concrete ceiling, 1 piece, approximately 80 mm (3 inches) diameter, color white, adjustable, including LED light source, 230 volts / 3.5 watts, note: embedding the recessed housings will be done by the builder themselves.

You will have to accept that.

If you want many recessed lights, you should find a partner who constructs cast-in-place concrete ceilings rather than precast slab ceilings.

Or maybe consider whether recessed lights are really suitable as the main source of lighting...

Whether you need to raise the ceiling depends on the raw structural height. The drop adds about 7 cm (3 inches). But I don't see many other options. You either pay the price from the builder, install a suspended ceiling yourself, or go without recessed lights. I personally choose the last option because recessed lights feel too cold and static to me. You can also achieve great effects with wall lighting and attractive ceiling lamps. Especially when you save a few thousand euros on recessed lights.

How about doing it yourself?
Use a diamond core drill bit to bore the holes into the precast concrete slabs yourself, place a styrofoam block on top, lay the cables, and then, after the slab has been poured, carefully remove the block from below. It takes time, but it could be worth it if you have many spots to install. The core drill bit costs around 100€.

I definitely wouldn’t recommend doing it yourself.
We drilled about 10 holes in the ceiling for occupancy sensors. You can expect around 15 minutes per hole. All of this was overhead. You get covered in dust nonstop, and after 2-3 holes, you’re exhausted...
