Hello.
Is a garage door width of 2.25m (7 ft 5 in) sufficient to drive a mid-sized car through?

It depends on the car. A Sharan won’t fit through unless the mirrors are folded in. For a Passat, it would be very tight (if it fits at all).
I don’t know which Sharan you drive, but with mine, you are even allowed to drive in construction zones and in areas with a 2.1m (6 ft 11 in) height restriction on the left lane. With the mirror caps, the 2011 model measures 208.1cm (82 inches).

Thank you. Thanks to you, I can now put this into perspective. Some of the answers were really funny... 🙂

It is a funny question after all 😉

Just because vehicles up to 2.10m (6 ft 11 in) wide are allowed doesn’t mean the lane itself is only 2.10m wide. Minimum clearances still need to be maintained despite a vehicle that is 2.10m wide.

By the way, be careful with the width stated in the vehicle documents—it’s usually without mirrors. ;-)

Come on... that’s why I said from mirror end to mirror end. And if the vehicle is 2.11m (6 ft 11.5 in) wide it will probably still fit, but it’s not allowed to drive there.

If a car is 2.08m (6 ft 10 in) wide, it will likely fit through a 2.25m (7 ft 5 in) wide gate, although it will be tight. Even a Ford Mustang fits through there.

The real question is what is behind the gate. Is the interior width of the garage also correspondingly narrower? That is much more important than the drive-through opening when it comes to comfort while getting in and out.

Of course, you have to subtract some width from the nominal clear passage width if you need to change direction immediately behind it. In my opinion, only the clear width for straight entry really matters. A garage door is wide enough when, theoretically, you wouldn’t cause any scratches even when driving in drunk. I have never recommended less than a rough construction nominal width of 251cm (99 inches).
