Hello everyone, I have a question that’s been on my mind for a while regarding my IKEA Billy bookshelf: Why do some BILLY hinges squeak, especially when they are under heavy load? I’ve noticed that the noise usually occurs when the shelf is heavily loaded or when the door is opened and closed multiple times. I suspect it has to do with the stress on the hinges, but what exactly causes the squeaking? Could it be due to material fatigue, lack of lubrication, or perhaps uneven load distribution? I’m looking forward to your insights or experiences so I can better understand or even fix the problem.

Under heavy load, these wear effects can become more pronounced That matches my observations. It’s possible that the plastic parts get compressed or shifted under load, causing the hinge to operate less smoothly and squeak.

The squeaking usually comes from a lack of lubrication. A combination of both causes sounds very plausible. I’ll start by thoroughly cleaning the shelf, lubricating the hinge, and then checking if the squeaking persists. If it does, I’ll take a closer look at the condition of the plastic parts. Thanks for the helpful tips so far!
