Hello everyone,

I am planning to assemble an IKEA Hemnes wardrobe soon, but I don’t yet have all the necessary tools ready. Could someone please tell me exactly which tools are typically required for this type of assembly?

I have built several IKEA furniture pieces before, but the Hemnes series seems a bit more robust and complex in construction than, for example, the Kallax shelf. I want to make sure I have everything needed — from screwdrivers to possibly special bits or other accessories.

Any advice on whether it’s better to screw manually or use a power tool, and which tools are essential to have at home to avoid issues during assembly, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your tips!

I would like to add that a small set of wooden strips or a temporary framework can be useful for aligning components during assembly or gently securing furniture pieces. While not part of the usual toolkit, this helps simplify the construction process and prevents possible damage.

Apart from that, a Phillips screwdriver, Allen keys, a cordless drill with adjustable torque, and a rubber mallet are perfectly sufficient.

One more question: what about side cutters or box cutters? Do I need these tools when assembling the Hemnes, for example to trim straps, films, or similar, or is a regular knife enough?

The box cutter or utility knife is especially useful when unpacking, as many packages are heavily sealed or closed with adhesive tape. I recommend a sharp knife for this purpose rather than side cutters, which are not very suitable for such tasks.

Also, be careful when cutting to avoid damaging components. It’s worth using a cutting mat if possible.

Side cutters might only be needed for cutting power cables if you customize lighting (e.g., LEDs that can be integrated in some Hemnes versions), but otherwise they are not necessary.
