ᐅ Which type of heating system makes the most sense?

Hello everyone,

It’s not that simple. In new construction, you often encounter air-to-water heat pumps, as this is probably the easiest and most cost-effective way to comply with current legal requirements.

However, I wonder if this is really the best (most economical) option. You often read about quite high electricity costs caused by air-to-water heat pumps. I believe a conventional gas or oil heating system alone is no longer permitted under current regulations, even though it is probably significantly cheaper in itself.

Air-to-air heat pumps seem to be rather impractical—very expensive to operate due to their low efficiency. Then there are options like water-to-water heat pumps (geothermal, groundwater, brine). These tend to have very high upfront costs, and the electricity expenses don’t seem negligible either.

Is there anyone here who can share their own experience regarding satisfaction with the different options? Or can someone provide a theoretical comparison of the pros and cons? In the end, the question for most of us is probably which option is the most economical, since nobody likes to waste money.

Best regards,

Quick question: I bought an existing property that is heated with gas. Am I now generally required to upgrade it with solar energy or heat recovery systems?

I recently received the following information from the general contractor / project manager: A ground source heat pump costs 10,000 euros more than an air-to-water heat pump. However, there is a subsidy so that the price difference is "only" around 5,000 to 6,000 euros.

And to be honest, if that's true, I wouldn’t have to think twice and would go for the ground source heat pump. But is that correct?

Yes, that's correct. In our case, the extra cost for gas or air-to-water heat pumps compared to ground source heat pumps is about 10,000 euros, minus the BAFA subsidy, so only 5,500 euros remain. Please make sure to submit the BAFA application BEFORE signing the contract with the builder.

The air-to-water heat pump is especially annoying for the neighbors!!! Everywhere I talk to people... there are conflicts with neighbors because of the noise.

Gas, district heating, geothermal, combined heat and power plants, etc. are all fine... but stay away from air-to-water heat pumps!

only my 2 cents

Steffen80, what is supposed to be so bad about an air-to-water heat pump? The noise from the split unit? Even at full capacity, all we can hear is a very quiet humming.
In Recklinghausen, there is an entire residential area full of these units. We walked through it during winter. Only one unit made any noise, and that was because its cover was a bit loose.

A geothermal heat pump will likely save at least 40 euros per month compared to an air-to-water heat pump for a 350m² (3767 ft²) house, based on the minimum requirements of the Energy Saving Ordinance. For a well-insulated house, your monthly heating costs may not even reach 40 euros.
