Hello everyone, I am currently planning to redesign my home office using IKEA’s BILLY bookcases. Since the room is quite small, I’m wondering: which BILLY bookcases are especially suitable for small spaces? It’s important to me that they don’t take up too much room but still provide storage for books and some decorative items. If you have any experience with them, I would be very grateful for tips regarding dimensions, recommended versions, or practical design ideas that help make the most of the space. I’m also curious whether narrow models with doors are worthwhile or if open shelves are better. Thanks in advance!

Hello, it’s often about mixing things up! I have a 40 x 28 x 202 cm (16 x 11 x 79 inch) BILLY shelf with glass doors in my living room, which feels very airy and doesn’t overwhelm the space. The glass doors keep the contents visible, which visually enlarges the room – very clever for small apartments! 🙂

Are there differences with the example of the doors [...]?

Sure! Wooden fronts provide more coverage and organization but make the room look smaller. Glass doors or open shelves feel lighter and are recommended if you don’t want to hide too much stuff.

If dust is a concern, doors are definitely useful. But if you can generally keep things tidy, open models are also great – they lighten up the room.
